Carla Blackwood
French Horn | Historical Horns | Teacher | Researcher
I grew up inspired by and at home in the bush;
Australian birdsong was the soundtrack to my sense of place and home.
I grew up inspired by and at home in the bush; Australian birdsong was the soundtrack to my sense of place and home. My family and I were always going on camping trips to remote locations. My first overnight bushwalk was at the age of 6. From a young age I took a horn with me; I have practised in the bush in national parks all over Australia.
Outside is where I have refined my interpretations, and drawn inspiration that has carried with me.
Whether I am playing modern or historical horns, new or early music, or teaching and mentoring the next generation, it is the bush and my deep connection to place which most inspires and and animates me.
"Carla Blackwood's horn solo was a shining moment, opening the window to a warm breath of open air in the high register...it was played to perfection."
